BRIEF: SET THE LOOK FOR NARRATING HIP HOP HISTORY

MTV News and The Smithsonian Channel came to us in need of titles, branding and graphics for Meaning in Music, a five-part docuseries on the history and cultural significance of hip hop. The episodes, focused on Style / Fashion, Remixing and Sampling, Sexual Revolution and Black Female MCs, The many sounds of Hip Hop, and Call and Response needed packaging that would match the expressive, vibrant, and artist-focused content, while still being systematic to unify the series.

SOLUTION: REMIX THE PAST AND THE PRESENT BY DESIGN

Our goal was to combine the flavor of MTV News with the historic gravity of The Smithsonian. We took inspiration from iconic poster and album art to create overlays and overprints of typography, archival imagery, and graphic collages, showcasing the intersection between artists, genres, and songs for elements like timelines, audio recordings, and lyrics. The final result was a robust package of graphic elements that mixed the past and the present in content and design. You can watch the series here.
